Jamie Oliver
I thought I’d write an entire post about this video, which isn’t new (came out in 2010).
Hat tip to Stefan Nilson – I found it on his site.
This is a TED talk by Jamie Oliver, who you may know as the naked chef.
The video is an incredibly compelling presentation of the current state of the obesity epidemic in America, and how he believes it can be largely prevented by radically transforming the country’s food culture.
Some interesting points made:
- While you are watching the clip, 4 people in America will die from diet-related illness.
- For the first time in hundreds of years, children will have a shorter life-span than their parents.
- Diet-related disease is the biggest cause of death.
- Kids are in school 180 days of the year, where they are served fast foods that destroy their health over time.
- Pizza and french fries are considered vegetables in U.S. schools.
- The milk that kids are served at school is loaded with so much sugar that it is equivalent to sugary soda.
- He discusses some potential methods to fight the problem.
The video is 22 minutes long. I highly recommend you watch it. It is horrifying, informative and inspiring, all at the same time.

Very eye opening..I ‘m right there with you..
This is very sad information. And the saddest part is that no one is doing something serious to change it.
I remember watching this on TV a few years back I think he came on to Oprah or some other popular TV show. Its alarming the sorts of food they cater at the schools but the main problem is that kids have become so used to eating junk food everywhere including in their homes that it has become normal.
It’s truly disgusting that kids are being fed garbage during such a critical growth period.
Thankfully due to guys like Jamie Oliver, schools are beginning to offer healthier meals for lunch. The United States is still very far from where it should be, but I really believe people are starting to change.

Hi there, hope the schools in Huntington don’t revert back to the bad foods. Jamie’s video on diet related desease was very inspiring. Good going Jamie.
Jamie has been doing this for years in the UK. He did a series about getting schools to serve up decent, nutritious food instead of burgers, chips and processed “meat” for nuggets. He got lots of criticism from all and sundry, because he dared to care, and because he knew the food being served up was inferior.
Sure he’s made millions out of cooking as the naked Chef, but he didn’t have to take this hard path to try and educate the people of two countries.
We have been misled for so long by the food companies and the supermarkets. Just watch a few tv shows that are currently on British TV and it all falls into place…..Secret Eaters (Channel 4) and The Men Who Made Us Fat (BBC2).
The more I read the more I believe that sugar is the number 1 enemy to public health, and all these so called low fat “healthy” products are loaded with the stuff!
I have lost 16lbs since adopting a low carb diet. I started at just under 15 Stone (210 lbs). Still got a long way to go though. Surprising, the food side has been quite easy. The harder bit is reducing the beer!
As us Soul fans always say….Keep The Faith!
